Virtual Physiotherapy vs. In-Person: Is It Effective? (2025 Research)

If you have ever hesitated to book a virtual physiotherapy session because you were not sure it would be "as good" as seeing someone in person - you are not alone. It is one of the most common questions we hear from women considering Call Physio Health.

And now, for the first time, we have a direct scientific answer.

In April 2025, researchers at the University of California San Francisco published the first head-to-head comparison of telehealth versus in-person pelvic floor physiotherapy in the Journal of Women's and Pelvic Physical Therapy. The results were significant and validating for every woman who has ever wondered whether virtual care could really work for something as personal and specific as pelvic health.

The study found that telehealth delivered comparable outcomes to in-person treatment for women with stress urinary incontinence, one of the most common pelvic floor conditions affecting women of all ages. Satisfaction rates were high across both groups.

This matters enormously. Because for years, the assumption has been that hands-on, in-person care is always superior for pelvic floor conditions. The evidence is now telling us something more nuanced and more empowering.

Why this makes sense clinically

As physiotherapists providing specialized treatment for women, we can tell you that a significant portion of what we do in pelvic health sessions does not require physical hands-on treatment. It includes:

All of these, which form the backbone of most pelvic floor rehabilitation programmes - are entirely deliverable through a screen. And in many cases, being in your own home is actually an advantage. You can show us your real environment, demonstrate the activities that trigger your symptoms, and practice in the space where your daily life actually happens.

Who benefits most from virtual pelvic physiotherapy

Research and clinical experience both point to virtual care being particularly effective for:

There are some situations where in-person care is preferable or necessary, particularly where internal manual therapy is a core part of the treatment plan or where symptoms are complex and require hands-on assessment. In those cases, we will always be transparent with you about what we can offer virtually and would also recommend when to see a local practitioner.

What this means if you have been on the fence

The evidence is clear that Virtual pelvic physiotherapy is not a compromise and definetly not second-best. For the right conditions and the right client it is clinically equivalent to in-person care with the added benefit of being accessible from anywhere in the world.

You do not have to live in London, Toronto, or Lagos to access expert pelvic health care. You just need a phone or a laptop and a private space.

If you have been putting off getting help because you did not think virtual care could really work - this is your sign that it can.
